WHAT ARE IMPLICATIONS OF AN AI PRICE WAR?

09.09.2026 A price war has broken out amongst Artificial Intelligence model providers. Below we look at the implications for the markets.

Initially many companies were terrified at being left behind by developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Some companies incorporated AI into employee reviews while other companies had AI leader boards that rewarded maximum usage. However, this approach landed some corporates with enormous bills. As a result, companies are now much more focused on cost and return on investment. Increasingly companies use a router that choses the cheapest model to carry out a task effectively.

The AI model companies responded to this by cutting prices. So instead of competing on the basis of the technical capability of the model they increasingly compete on the basis of how cost effective it is at completing a task. The scale of the price war can be gauged from the fact that the Large Language Model token expenditure index has halved in the last three months. With the costs of data centres rising, due to silicon chip inflation, margins of AI model producers are undoubtedly under pressure.

Artificial Intelligence is a powerful new technology that will undoubtedly change the way the economy operates. Indeed, the launch of Claude Code was an important milestone. The model was capable of writing high quality computer code and was also capable of multi-stage workflows. However, the price war suggests that the AI model industry may not be a high margin industry.

The implications for markets are that AI model companies will have to sell a lot more product before reaching profitability. Thinner margins for AI model companies may also dim the enthusiasm of hyperscalers for data centre capex. So with an AI price war in full-swing it makes sense to take some profit on technology intensive investments.
